Call 321-635-8533Call us today if
A tooth is aching persistently, or the pain wakes you at night.
A tooth has broken, cracked or been knocked out.
A filling or crown has come out.
Your face or gum is swollen, or there is a bad taste that will not shift, which can point to infection.
You have had bleeding that will not stop after an extraction.
Something is trapped between teeth and will not come out, or a wire or appliance is cutting into your mouth.
If you are unsure whether it counts, call anyway. We would much rather tell you it can wait until your next appointment than have you sit with something that could not.
Call 321-635-8533There is no lecture and no judgment here. Our first priority is understanding what hurts and getting you comfortable.
What to do in the meantime
A knocked-out permanent tooth. Hold it by the crown rather than the root, rinse gently with milk or water if it is dirty, and try to place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep it in milk and get to us quickly. The first hour matters more than anything else you can do.
Swelling. A cold compress against the outside of the cheek, ten minutes at a time.
Pain. Over-the-counter painkillers taken as directed. Do not hold aspirin against the gum, because it burns the tissue.
A crown that has come off. Keep it and bring it with you, since it can often be re-cemented.
When to go to the ER
- Trouble breathing or swallowing
- Uncontrolled bleeding
- Significant facial swelling spreading toward the eye or throat
- Major facial or jaw trauma
If you have any of these, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room first. We can take care of the dental side once you are safe.
Root canal therapy
A root canal has a worse reputation than it deserves. When the nerve inside a tooth becomes infected, the pain is often severe, and the treatment is what stops it. Under local anesthetic the infected tissue is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed, and the tooth is usually crowned afterwards to protect it.
The part worth knowing is that the procedure is not the painful part. The infection is. Most people find the appointment itself comparable to having a filling, and the aim is always to get you out of pain as quickly as we safely can. The alternative to a root canal is usually losing the tooth, which is a bigger and more expensive problem to solve.
Tooth extractions
Removing a tooth is the last option rather than the first, and we will look hard at whether it can be saved before we suggest it. Sometimes it cannot, because of a fracture below the gum, severe decay or advanced gum disease, and in those cases removing it is what stops the problem from spreading.
Extractions are done under local anesthetic and are generally more straightforward than people expect. We will talk about replacing the tooth at the same time rather than months later, because planning for the gap before it exists gives you better options than waiting does.
Replacing a missing toothWhat it costs
You will be told what emergency treatment costs before it begins. Nobody in pain should also be worrying about an unknown bill, and being unclear about money at exactly the moment somebody is most vulnerable is precisely the kind of thing this practice exists not to do.
Questions we get asked
Can you see me today?
We will do everything we can. Call 321-635-8533 and we will tell you honestly what is possible rather than book you three days out and call it an emergency.
Do I need to be an existing patient?
No. Emergency appointments are open to anyone.
Is a root canal as bad as people say?
No. The infection is the painful part, not the treatment. Most people find the appointment comparable to having a filling, and the aim is always to get you out of pain as quickly as we safely can.
My tooth has been knocked out. What do I do right now?
Follow the steps in What to do in the meantime above and call us straight away.
What will it cost?
You will be told before treatment begins. Nobody in pain should also be worrying about an unknown bill.
